TIM MALTIN "TITANIC WAS CALLED A SHIP OF DREAMS"

Tim Maltin “Titanic was called a ship of dreams and was , it really was”

By Evi Tsolaki

We all believe that the Titanic sank from human error, yet after 111 years the historian Tim Milan comes to us to contradict this argument by giving us another explanation about the sinking of the ocean liner! This is the first exclusive interview to give to the Greek readers! Does he solve all of our queries regarding Titanic’s shipwreck or he creates more? Enjoy this interview! I would really like to thank him from the bottom of my heart for this honor!

111 years of Titanic... Please tell us why people love it after so many years? What do you believe?

Tim: Because Titanic is the ultimate Tragedy.  Like an Ancient Greek play, her story has all the elements of the God's (or nature) being stronger than Man - Man is humbled by the power of the Universe.  Also, Titanic was a Noah's Ark of nationalities - a city with walls of steel, floating out into the Universe: struck down by nature in the form of a block of ice in the dark

Do you believe that Titanic sank due to human error (e.g. ignorance) or due to weather phenomena?

Tim: Absolutely just due to freak weather phenomena: this was the best and most experienced crew in the world - they knew what they were doing.  The danger of the ice region for ships was the danger of fog - not ice: because, even on a dark night, if the air was clear you can always see ice 4 miles away.  So, what caught them out?  The answer is a freakishly strong thermal inversion over the Labrador Current, which created abnormal refraction known as a superior mirage.  This created Fata Bromosa on the horizon, which camouflaged the iceberg FROM BEHIND until it was too late to avoid.

Please Tell me your opinion about the construction of Titanic II . Do you believe that is right for the historic memory of Titanic I?

Tim:  Yes, I LOVE Titanic II!  First I was worried it would be all gambling machines and not true to the original beauty and sophistication o Titanic's design - but then I saw that the new design is even more beautiful than the original one! Seriously, Thaomas Andrews would have been delighted with what Dr Clive Palmer plans to achieve :)

“ Thomas Andrews would have been delighted with what Dr Clive Palmer plans to achieve”

Please tell me about you... How did you decide to have a serious interest and get involved with Titanic’s shipwreck?

Tim:  I did not "make up my mind", I just watched the black and white film A Night To Remember when I was 7 years old and, after that, I was hooked.  A Night To Remember is the best and most accurate film ever made about the Titanic and I recommend everyone to watch it. My ebook A Very Deceiving Night is named in homage to Walter Lord's great book A Night To Remember, and also quotes what Captain Lord of the nearby Californain said: "it we a very deceiving night."  And it was, it really was! ;)

Regarding your documentary about the Titanic, can you please tell us how many hours or days have you studied for this project? And how difficult that was?

Tim:  Very difficult.  My research took 6 years and the film took 6 months to make...we took 12 flights in 14 days when we were filming on location in the US.  I also loved kayaking with icebergs in Newfoundland - and discovering many 100 year old log books from ships in 1912 - in Hamberg in Germany :)

Please tell me about your future dreams.

Tim:  I dream to arrive in New York with Evi Tsolaki  aboard Titanicii!  Can you arrange it?  I also want everyone in the world who has ever heard of the Titanic to understand that her collision was not caused by the negligence of her Captain or the White Star Line, but by an "Act of God" - that is, by the sheer force of our wonderful universe
